Archie

Archie aka “Rafiki Ambergate” is an outstanding allrounder with varied experiences and serious performance talent and umlimited potential. He is a 6yo, 167cm/16.2 approx chestnut gelding by Testa Rossa out of an Encosta De Lago mare. Breeding and Type Archie is an extremely athletic type with good conformation, built to event! Both Testa Rossa and Encosta De Lago are some of the most highly sought after thoroughbred bloodlines for eventing. They also have progeny that have been incredibly successful in the show ring, both producing Garry Owen Winners. Temperament We have found Archie to be easy to handle with good general ground manners. He has been super quiet here with us, the only cheeky thing he has done has been get a bit playful on the odd occasion if he taps a show jump. He is naturally careful and doesn’t like to hit the fences, which is a good thing for his future as an upper level event horse but means he is not suitable for a beginner or very nervous rider for jumping. He has been excellent out on the roads and trails and has been easy to do everything with on the ground and in the saddle. Prior Experience Archie has loads of experience with regular and varied outings including interstate travel for competitions like Sydney 3 day and Wallaby Hill. He has been successfully ridden by 14yo’s right through to 65yo riders. He has had a lot of experience hacking out and loves the beach! As a 4yo he has scored up to 73% in prelim dressage and has consistently improved since then. He has won at a dressage show at Werribee Park with 74% in a huge field of 35. He has multiple scores over 70% in eventing dressage. He has evented to EV95 with multiple completions and although he doesn’t have eventing placings on the board just yet, he was quite green for the level at the time of competition due to COVID restrictions limiting the opportunity for cross country schooling in preparation and having to learn on the job. This is not a reflection of his quality, or potential to be competitive and with further consistent consolidation of his training since then, he is ready to step out and be competitive this coming season. He has been jumping up to 105cm show jumping with placings at 95cm. His current rider is in her 50’s and has produced him with no dramas and feels very safe out on him at shows. She mentioned he can get a little excited in the show jumping warm up if he hasn’t been out for a while when he hits a rail but this doesn’t phase her and shouldn’t worry a competent novice/intermediate rider. Paces Archie has 3 lovely, expressive paces with a really comfortable, scopey canter and swingy, floaty trot. He has a good over track in walk with clear 4 beat rhythm. Jumping As a jumper, Archie is super relaxed, bold and feels very reliable and fun. He is an absolute superstar already popping over 110cm with ease. He has a unique jumping style that works for him but is very naturally careful. He will develop more of a traditional bascule shape over a fence as he builds more strength in his collected work through gymnastic exercises. He certainly has the athleticism, courage and rideability to make a competitive eventer at the highest levels of the sport. He keeps a relaxed rhythm into a fence and is easy to see a distance on, he will just cruise along in a slow canter until you ask him for more and jump out of his rhythm from whatever spot you ride to with a huge range. He is honest, forgiving and willing which makes him an ideal candidate for * level cross country with a huge ground covering stride and careful jump. Due to COVID restrictions he has only competed at EV95 but it wouldn’t take long for him to cruise around a 1* with a confident rider. Rider Suitability Although we have found to be an absolute delight to handle and ride, he is best suited to an intermediate rider/handler as he is a big, powerful athlete and although he is very quiet he is not bombproof. He would be an incredible asset for an ambitious rider looking to move up the levels and WIN. Easy enough for a junior to do PC/Inter-schools but fancy enough to be competitive through EA, FEI and into the senior levels of the sport. Classy enough to dabble in straight dressage and showjumping too and pretty/typey enough to show. He has a good foundation of basics and is smart and trainable with a good work ethic so would progress in his new riders chosen discipline quickly. This horse will be someone’s best friend as well as a versatile, beautiful and super competitive equine partner who has the potential to jump around some very big, technical cross country in the future.
